The following information will help you find your ring size from the comfort of your own home- even if you have never fired up a torch, or swung a silversmith's hammer. For ease, and accuracy, consider using a sizing gauge like this one.
Factors That May Affect Accurate Measurement...
Temperature. You may have noticed that temperature can affect how well your rings fit your fingers. Cold hands can make them feel loose, while the heat of summertime can make the fit feel a bit snug.
Hydration. Additionally- your level of hydration, or water retention can also cause a variation in measurement accuracy.
Which Hand Are You Measuring? If you decide to delve deep into your finger measurement project, you may also notice that fingers on your dominant hand take a larger size than your non-dominant hand. (This varies from person to person.)
Knuckle Size You may also notice that the knuckle is larger than the base of your finger. In this instance- take separate measurements of the knuckle and the base of the finger, and choose a size in-between to accommodate the difference.
How to find an accurate ring size.
1. If you have a ring design in mind, carefully consider which finger will be the bearer of the new adornment. Some styles with a thick band or high profile may be more comfortable as a thumb ring- or may not fit comfortably if placed next-door to another ring- like a wedding band. Additionally- wide bands made from a flat sheet of sterling silver may require a larger size for a comfortable fit.
2. It is very important that the system of measurement you are using should match your ring makers exactly, to ensure accuracy. My customers use this World-Famous Ring Size Gauge to find their size. I match it in my workroom to custom size rings like this
3. In order to find the perfect ring size, you may want to take several measurements at different times of day- including at least one in the evening to find an average, or best fit. It is also better to choose a size that is just slightly loose, rather than too tight.
4. Take additional measurements of your knuckle if it is larger than base of the finger.
After all of this, how will you know if you have the correct size? It is simple. The ideal size slides comfortably over the knuckle, and doesn’t feel too loose at the base of the selected finger.
When you are buying a new piece of jewelry, always read the fine print to find out what materials the piece is made of. If you can arrange for an in-person fitting, you will be able to try out different options and find the best fit. If that is not possible, be sure to take several measurements, and ask your ring maker any questions you might have- regarding fit, and return/exchange options. A good piece of jewelry is well made, comfortable, and expresses your personal style.
